SOCAN Member number
Your unique identifying number as a SOCAN member. Your member number is automatically generated through the SOCAN system once the new member application is approved, and all supporting documents have been received. Upon receipt of confirmation of membership, new members should be able to view their member number on the main page of their profile in the Member Portal.
ISRC (International Standard Recording Code)
ISRC is a unique 12-character code that is used to identify a specific song recording and acts like a digital fingerprint. This code enables the tracking and identification of recordings across different platforms and distribution channels. This helps in royalty collection and streamlines the management of rights. It is usually embedded in the metadata of the music. In Canada, you can request a code with SOPROQ.
ISWC (International Standard Music Work Code)
ISWC is a unique identifier for musical works, rather than recordings, and is usually assigned by a PRO (Performing Rights Organization). When you register a work with SOCAN, it is first assigned a temporary code, which is replaced by the ISWC code a few weeks later and can be found in the member portal in your catalogue.
IPI (Interested Parties Information)
IPI is a unique identifier assigned to rights holders and identifies music creators and publishers. It is sometimes known as a Composer, Author, and Publisher (CAE) number, though this is an older term. The IPI is assigned by a PRO (which is SOCAN in Canada) to its members.
Work Number / Work Number
The Work Number is the work registration number SOCAN shares on earnings statements, Member Portal catalogues, and the Public Repertoire site. This is a SOCAN-specific number, while the ISWC is shared internationally between PROs. You can see your Work Number in your catalogue in the member portal.
