Words + Music is the online magazine of SOCAN, the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada. Just as SOCAN was formed in 1990 by the merger of its predecessor Canadian performing rights organizations PROCAN and CAPAC, their separate magazines merged in 1994 to form Words + Music. Our mission is to provide interesting, high-quality content about the increasingly exciting and successful Canadian music scene. As the scene has grown and changed over the past two decades, Words + Music has always strived to tell the story of Canadian music, and be as inclusive as possible. We’ve covered hip-hop, electronic dance music, the garage rock revival, the soul revival, world music, blues, jazz, country, rock, folk, and more. As one of the few national Canadian magazines specifically about songwriters and music publishers, Words + Music has always offered thoughtful, relevant content about the mysterious process of creating music, and the essential process of fostering it. In order to bring you magazine content in a better, faster, more efficient, less expensive, and more environmentally-friendly way, Words + Music became an online-only publication in March of 2015.
