In the Summer of 2024, as a student intern working at SOCAN Foundation, Jackson “Jaxn” Hughes has led a series of one-on-one workshops, engagingly educating SOCAN members in music production, beat-making, mixing, and sound design.

Hughes has taught fundamental tools, like how to EQ recordings, use compression, and navigate other effects, so that the participants can learn how to get a good mix for their recordings. Over the course of his work for the Foundation, he’s educated a wide range of SOCAN members from all walks of life; from established artists who are already more than capable of making music digitally on their own, to people just beginning their music career, who’ve never touched a DAW (digital audio workstation) in their life.

Through this work, Hughes has helped our members better navigate the creative world; communicate more effectively with their creative collaborators; and more thoroughly understand the various creative roles in the music production world.  He’s also elevated the potential of both past and current participants in the Foundation’s Equity x Production program.

Participants have greatly appreciated the sessions, and Hughes’s approach.

“I’m so glad that an initiative like this was organized, and am so fortunate to have participated in it,” says Philip. “Jackson is super-cool and knowledgeable about his craft, and really helped me improve my skills as a producer, as well as open my eyes to different techniques and methods I hadn’t thought of before.”

“Jackson Hughes is a natural teacher,” says Flo. “Absolutely courteous, polite, beyond patient, eager to teach, or to explore new things, and troubleshoot with you.  He has a way of simplifying what can seem to be the most intimidating tasks, making it user-friendly, and therefore encouraging you to take it on and master it.”

“Working with Jackson has helped me to have a better-defined ear when producing my music,” says Sarah. “As an independent artist, I strive to have a certain experience for the listener and his coaching is leading me to be able to create my desired impact.”

Hughes is available until Aug. 31, 2024. Apply for a session.
