Our Top Secrets video series showcases creators who’ve achieved the feat of having one of their songs reach the top of the charts, earning them a SOCAN No. 1 Award in recognition of their achievement. They tell us the stories behind the making of these hits.

When Jay Scøtt wrote and recorded “Woodstock” alone in his basement, he had no idea his cathartic response to grim headlines, and the chaos of social media, would end up topping the French-language radio charts in Québec. But that’s exactly what happened during the weeks of May 5 and 12, 2025. Not only that, but his earworm even returned to the No. 1 spot on June 30, likely riding the wave of excitement from his landmark performance on the main stage at Les Francos de Montréal on June 13, 2025.

We caught up with him to celebrate the milestone just hours before he hit the stage, as he shared the story behind the song, including how his girlfriend played a key role in its success by encouraging him to re-work the chorus.
