In a SOCAN Session at the organization’s Toronto office, Dan Mangan performs a stripped-down live version of his song “Lay Low,” preceded by a funny story about not taking Paul McCartney’s advice for the song. SOCAN member Kelly Archer won two 2018 BMI Country Music Awards at the 66th annual ceremony, held at the company’s office in Nashville, on Nov. 13, 2018. Archer earned one honour for co-writing “For Her” with Sarah Buxton. The song is published by Big Loud Proud Crowd, Bux Tone Music, Downtown DMP Songs, Round Hill Works, and Stars and Stripes and Maple Leaf Music. The other went to Archer and her fellow SOCAN member Tebey (Ottoh) for co-writing “Somebody Else Will,” which is published by BMG Platinum Songs U.S., Downtown DMP Songs, Songs for Elle, and Stars and Stripes and Maple Leaf Music.
The night before, on Nov. 12, 2018, ASCAP presented its 56th Annual Country Music Awards in downtown Nashville. SOCAN member Gordie Sampson won for co-writing “God, Your Mama, And Me” with Josh Kear and Hillary Lindsey. The song, recorded by Florida Georgia Line, featuring Backstreet Boys, is published by BMG Gold Songs, Big Yellow Dog Music, Champagne Whiskey Publishing, and Rezonant Music. Sampson’s fellow SOCAN member Steven Lee Olsen also won, for co-writing “More Girls Like You,” with David Garcia and Kip Moore. The song, recorded by Moore, is published by Cornman Music, D Soul Music, Point Break Publishing, Universal Music Corporation, and Warner/Chappell Music Publishing.

SOCAN was pleased to surprise singer-songwriter and SOCAN member Megan Bonnell with a No. 1 Song Award to for co-writing “Separate Rooms,” which topped the CBC Radio 2 Top 20 chart on May 24, 2018.
Bonnell co-wrote her song with Donovan Woods (previously awarded for “Separate Rooms” during Canadian Country Music Week 2018), Josh Van Tassel, and producer Chris Stringer. The song is also co-published by Arts & Crafts and Warner Chappell Music Canada.
SOCAN A&R Representative Melissa Cameron made the unexpected presentation to Bonnell, Stringer, and Amy Eligh of Arts & Crafts on Nov. 16, 2018, at a pop-up event at Ella’s Uncle in West downtown Toronto. The morning pop-up supported the release of her current Separate Rooms album on vinyl, in advance of her performance that night at The Mod Club, as part of the “Massey Hall Presents” series.
