The 35th Gala SOCAN took place last night at TOHU, in Montréal, bringing together a select group of industry figures from both behind the scenes and the spotlight.

Among the creators in attendance was Luc Plamondon. He was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award, a testament to his remarkable heritage to the music scenes of Québec, Canada, the Francophonie, and beyond. Pierre Kwenders, Pierre Lapointe, William Cloutier—whom we’ve seen in the most recent stage adaptation of StarmaniaFouKi, Marie-Mai, Klô Pelgag and Antoine Corriveau took turns during a showstopping medley built around Plamondon’s repertoire.

The legendary Marjo was part of the celebration too. She received the Cultural Impact Award for the song Provocante, co-written with Jean Millaire and released on the album Tant qu’il y aura des enfants in 1990. Under the musical direction of Chloé Lacasse, Rose Perron (of the duo Rau_Ze) and Les Shirley delivered a spirited rendition of the award-winning track.

Harmonium was also celebrated. Nearly a year after the passing of Serge Fiori, his bandmates Louis Valois, Monique Fauteux, Michel Normandeau, Libert Subirana and Serge Locat walked the red carpet before being applauded during the presentation of the Cultural Impact Award for Un musicien parmi tant d’autres.

A Gala in Tune with Its Times

The Gala also celebrated the new generation, notably with Fredz, a singer-songwriter enjoying a meteoric rise and success on both sides of the Atlantic. He left TOHU with two Popular Song Awards for Je veux and La vérité, as well as the International Song Award for his track Extraordinaire.

Charlotte Cardin helped set the tone for part of the evening, even though she was abroad on the European leg of her tour. She took home four SOCAN Awards for the songs Un peu trop, Tant pis pour elle, Gordon in the Willows—a duet with Patrick Watson—and Feel Good.

Men I Trust—Dragos Chiriac, Emmanuelle Proulx and Jessy Caron, who were in attendance for the occasion—also stood out during the evening, taking home the International Award. It’s worth noting that the Québec City band has, in recent months, been opening for Billie Eilish.

Propelled onto the global stage by the soundtrack he created for the series Heated Rivalry, Peter Peter left with the Breakthrough Screen Composer Award, marking the addition of a new string to his bow after making a name for himself as a singer-songwriter who’s is known for his poetic electronic propositions.
