On Feb. 15 and 16, 2025, SOCAN representatives were on hand at this year’s Phoque Off, a festival dedicated to emerging music in Québec City, to provide artists and music industry professionals with practical resources, and host discussions on music rights and international collaboration.
At the Indie Campus of Phoque Off PRO, our colleagues Tessy Pokuah Paquin and Karine Landry hosted the SOCAN booth, answering questions from artists and professionals on the management of their rights, and the services offered by the organization. SOCAN Foundation’s Julien Boumard Coallier was also present to inform attendees about the Foundation’s programs.
A SOCAN 101 session, presented by Sara Dendane, provided an overview of music rights and royalties. She explained to creators how to receive the royalties to which they’re entitled, and how to better structure their careers. Coallier also addressed the crowd to explain the Foundation’s various initiatives.
On Feb. 16, Dendane hosted the panel “Co-writing as an export tool,” where she explored the leverage that international collaborations can create in the development of a musical career. Félix Petit, aka FELP, a producer and composer, and Filature Unity’s Ariane Tamalet (Paris) shared their experiences and advice to demonstrate how co-writing is a strategic tool for exporting your music.
For those unable to attend, we spoke to Petit, who’s collaborated with Les Louanges, Hubert Lenoir, Laurence-Anne, Safia Nolin, Hawa B, Barry Paquin Roberge, Robert Robert, and Bonnie Banane (from France), among others. He shared his thoughts and advice on co-writing, as well as best practices for fruitful collaboration and creative sessions.
During the event, we also attended concerts by Yoo Doo Right, Gab Paquet, and Thaïs. Their captivating performances added energy to the 2025 Phoque Off kick-off weekend.
By supporting these initiatives, SOCAN reaffirmed its commitment to creators and professionals of the music industry by providing them with the resources and knowledge essential to navigate our industry, to protect their rights, and to develop their careers.
Phoque Off ends on Feb. 22, 2025. Complete details can be found here: https://phoqueoff.com/
