On Sept. 6, 2024, SOCAN co-presented a “You Shoot, We Score” session at the Canadian Broadcasting Centre, under the banner of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The event was co-presented by Music Publishers Canada (MPC) and the Screen Composers Guild of Canada (SCGC).
Whether music is the source of inspiration, or the element that transforms moving pictures into an extraordinary experience, music and visual storytelling are essential partners. SOCAN and its presenting partners gathered some of the best composers, songwriters, music publishers, and music supervisors at this panel, celebrating Canada’s dynamic talent. The participants provided inspirational discussions on composing, storytelling, and filmmaking, revealing how Canadian artistry brings screen projects to life.
The session was co-moderated by Gagan Singh, SOCAN’s Creative Executive, Film/TV & Visual Media, and Kim Temple, Senior Manager, Programming and Industry Relations, MPC; President, High Priestess Publishing; and Director of Sync & Licensing, Six Shooter Records.
Participants were:
- Lesley Barber, who’s scored a string of award-winning and highly acclaimed projects, most notably Kenneth Lonergan’s Oscar-nominated film, Manchester by The Sea. Barber is the Governor representing the Music Branch on the Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts.
- Heather Gardner, Head of Music Supervision + Licensing, Vapor Music and Long Division, whose credits span television series, feature films, TV movies, advertising campaigns and videogames. Gardner also serves on the Board of Directors for the Guild of Music Supervisors, Canada.
- Alexandra Petkovski, an accomplished composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, artist, and songwriter, who Rolling Stone has called “a haunting artist to watch.” She has won one of the SOCAN Foundation’s 2022 Emerging Screen Composers Awards, and has had her works heard across platforms like Fortnite, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Netflix, HBO, and PBS.
