2020 SOCAN Gala Video: Michael “DRTWRK” Suski, International Award

DRTWRK, a.k.a. Michael Suski, has won the 2020 SOCAN International Award, and has an impressive track record for 2019: a production credit on Kanye West’s Grammy nominated album Jesus is King, which also won two American Music Awards; a collaboration with Timbaland; he worked on Joyner Lucas’ album; and he produced the song “Let It Fly” by Lil’ Wayne and Travi$ Scott, which won the 2020 SOCAN International Song Award.

These are the first major awards that DRTWRK has earned in his musical career. We reached him at his home in the West end of Montréal to hear his story, from his first collaborations with local artists to the highest levels of American rap. He also told us about the difficulty of gaining media recognition for an English-speaking music creator in Québec, echoing the criticisms of Kaytranada a few days ago.

2020 SOCAN Gala Video: Jean-Phi Goncalves, Screen Composer of the Year

Pour une année 2019 remarquable avec des compositions dans les séries télé « Cerebrum » et « Une autre histoire », le film « Jouliks » et la série « Mon fils », réalisés par Mariloup Wolfe, quatre productions du Cirque du Soleil dont « Alegria in the Night », Goncalves reçoit Le SOCAN du Compositeur de musique à l’image de l’année. Jean-Phi Goncalves remporte également un Prix SOCAN pour la musique-thème de l’émission Le Tricheur, dans la catégorie Musique de télévision — National, Émission de variétés ou d’affaires publiques.

Dans cette entrevue réalisée à distance, Jean-Phi tente d’expliquer ce qui le rend si populaire auprès des créateurs audiovisuels, ce qui le motive à travers le processus créatif de la composition de la musique à l’image, et il donne ses conseils pour se lancer dans ce métier qui demande énormément d’autonomie.

Et comme Jean-Phi ne fait rien comme les autres, à la fin de sa vidéo de remerciements, il a composé et performé la toute première pièce musicale faite à partir du trophée Le SOCAN, le premier et seul trophée majeur de l’industrie de la musique à être également un instrument de musique. Les cinq crotales qui le constituent sont fabriqués par SABIAN, le fabricant de calibre international d’instruments de percussion établi au Nouveau-Brunswick.

Words & Music is pleased to extend its helpful “how-to” series for our members, “The Breakdown,” into the realm of short, question-and-answer videos.

In this episode, SOCAN A&R Representative Racquel Villagante talks with Miranda Bonavia, who manages the careers of reclusive, highly successful singer-songwriter Allan Rayman and upcoming Indigenous artist Ruby Waters. Bonavia has also interned at Bedlam Music Management / Dine Alone Records, and volunteered in office administration at Ottawa Festivals, a networking environment for local, capital-area fests, special events, and fairs.
