SOCAN will be out in full force throughout Canadian Music Week, June 6-11, 2022, participating in four of the conference panel discussions at the InterContinental Hotel on Front Street in downtown Toronto, as the event returns to a live-in-person presentation for the first time in three years.

On Wednesday, June 8, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. (all times ET), in the Ballroom, SOCAN CEO Jennifer Brown will take part in a panel discussion on the State of the Industry: A United, Dynamic and Resilient Canadian Music Ecosystem, looking back at how the industry has been affected by pandemic restrictions, and looking ahead at how we can better support everyone within the music ecosystem, and how a united industry can develop further growth, so that we can support a full return to live music.

On Thursday, June 9, from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m., in the Ontario Room, Executive Director of The SOCAN Foundation, Charlie Wall-Andrews, will also (along with the panel) look at the state of the Canadian music industry, in View From The Top: Music Executives Address the Industry’s Key Issues. The group will discuss various key questions, including: What will be the contours of the music industry of the future? Will Web 3 be transformational? Can the investment wave in music assets be sustained? Can rights management organizations meet the challenges of an ever growing number of usages? Does streaming need fixing?

The same day, from 5:15 to 6:00 p.m., in the Ballroom, SOCAN Creative Executive Houtan Hodania , along with other panelists, will share his thoughts in what’s sure to be a popular session, Show Me The Money! How To Make a Living as a Music Creator. From performance and mechanical royalties, to synchs, neighbouring rights, master royalties, and more, this informative panel will focus on the many revenue streams available to music creators, and on the organizations that collect and distribute the funds.

Finally, on Friday June 10, from 9:55 to 10:40 a.m., in the Ontario Room, SOCAN Vice President, Royalty Collections, Kit Wheeler, will join other panelists for The Future of Live Streaming Concerts: Hybrid and Beyond. During the pandemic, the world transitioned to live streaming concerts out of necessity. Now, live streaming is an established business, but making live streaming concerts as dynamic as a live show is the next phase of development. How can artists leverage live streaming shows whether they do a pre-show, full show and/or post show? What are the new tools for making live streaming shows more collaborative, engaging and financially lucrative? What are the financial opportunities for songwriters/publishers and artists?
